The Boy in the Striped Pajamas took place during the Holocaust. In the book it mostly took place in Out-With were the Jews were sent to die. But Berlin was important too because it had a lot to due with the story. Out-With was a horrible, ugly place, at least that's how Bruno described it. The house in Out-With was only 3 floors so nothing compared to the house in Berlin. Also another major place in the book would be the fence. The fence is important because that's where Bruno met Shmuel and become good friends with him.
